These automated probes mapped out the moon's surface in detail to identify prospective landing sites for the series of lunar missions that came to be known as the "Second Giant Leap". Inexpensive to manufacture and reliable to operate, the Lunar Scout was later adapted to explore Mars and its twin moons Phobos and Deimos. The Estes
